Amul Milk Price: Amul, India’s largest food brand recently announced a significant price cut across more than 700 products following the government’s reduction
in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on key dairy items. The revised prices, effective September 22, span butter, ghee, UHT milk, ice cream, cheese, paneer, chocolates, bakery goods, condensed milk, frozen snacks, peanut spreads, and malt-based beverages. The price slash ranges from Rs 1 to Rs 200, depending on the category and pack size. Dr. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), hailed the move as a turning point for the dairy sector. “The GST cut will bring in big benefits to consumers and create a better future for milk producers across India,” he said, adding that ice cream, previously taxed as a luxury item, will now see stronger demand. According to Mehta, the reduction in tax rates on butter and ghee will be highly advantageous for households. “We expect a clear shift from unbranded players to branded dairy products,” he noted. Cuts on paneer, a large consumption category, are also projected to spur growth in organised retail, encouraging more consumers to migrate from loose to packaged goods.
GST relief
The GST relief is likely to stimulate demand for high-protein foods and milk-based products while giving a fresh push to the organised dairy sector. Mehta highlighted that the cooperative model, backed by 36 lakh farmers, stands to gain as consumer spending increasingly channels back to producers. With the new tax regime making nutrition more affordable, the country’s per capita intake of dairy items such as cheese butter and ice cream could rise sharply, setting the stage for robust expansion across the dairy value chain.
