What is the story about?
US President Donald Trump signalled a potential thaw in the relationship with India, stating that negotiations to address trade barriers were ongoing and expressing his intention to speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the
coming weeks. The comments marked a shift in tone after weeks of heightened discord between the two nations.
“I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He added, “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our

CNBC-TV18 reported exclusively citing sources that India and the US officials are likely to have an exchange of trade delegations soon, where both officials are likely to meet in-person later this month.
Sources also said that there is a strong desire on the part of India and the US to fast track trade negotiations.
Prime Minister Modi reciprocated the same sentiment on
X, emphasising the close partnership between Washington and New Delhi. His post read, “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership."
An hour later, Donald Trump shared PM Modi’s post on Truth Social.
The warmer rhetoric comes amid a complex backdrop. Bloomberg reported that Trump has been urging European Union
leaders to join him in imposing tariffs on India and China, seeking to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into ceasefire talks with Ukraine. During a September 9 meeting with EU officials, Trump indicated that the US would match any new tariffs Europe imposes on India or China.
This is also the second such overture between the two leaders after Trump mentioned over the weekend that he will always remained friends with PM Modi and there is "nothing to worry" when it comes to India, China ties. The PM had also responded to the statement
