The Nifty 50 index has gained 700 points in the last four trading sessions as foreign institutions have begun nibbling into the equity markets and are also covering their record shorts with which they began the October F&O series. The index has received a further boost from corporate earnings, which, barring a few odd instances, have mostly been on the positive side, particularly from index heavyweights like Reliance Industries. Most of the other banking names, barring ICICI Bank, which reported results, either met or surprised positively on the margins front during the quarter too. Although the Samvat gone by delivered no returns for the benchmark index, the bulls would be hopeful that a combination of the income tax and GST reforms would spur demand, and coupled with a low base of last year, earnings will also see a turnaround in the second half of the financial year.
