What's Happening?
Sargent's Daughters gallery is set to present a significant new series of monumental, mixed-media works by conceptual artist Jane Benson at Art Basel Miami Beach, scheduled from December 2–6, 2026, at the
Miami Beach Convention Center. Benson's presentation will be located in the Nova Sector at Booth N7. Her new works are text-based drawings that reconfigure Mary Shelley’s 'Frankenstein' to explore themes of womanhood and rage. These pieces fragment and distort the original text's legibility while amplifying Shelley’s personal voice. Benson's artistic practice is known for appropriating and unraveling existing literature, artwork, or objects, spanning drawing, sound, new media, and sculpture. This presentation follows the gallery's participation in Art Basel Qatar earlier in the year, and Benson will also have a solo exhibition at Sargent’s Daughters in Autumn 2026, a culmination of nearly two years of collaboration.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of Jane Benson's new series at Art Basel Miami Beach highlights a significant moment for contemporary art, particularly in its engagement with classic literature and feminist discourse. By reinterpreting 'Frankenstein' through a lens of womanhood and rage, Benson's work brings a timely and urgent perspective to a foundational text, resonating with current societal conversations around gender and power. This presentation at a major international art fair like Art Basel Miami Beach provides a prominent platform for these themes, potentially influencing critical discourse within the art world and beyond. The methodical and rigorous nature of Benson's art-making, which involves eroding entrenched frameworks to reveal novel interpretations, underscores the evolving role of art in challenging and re-evaluating historical narratives. The exhibition also marks a notable achievement for Sargent's Daughters, solidifying its presence in the international art scene.
What's Next?
Following her presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2026, Jane Benson is scheduled to have a solo exhibition at Sargent’s Daughters in Autumn 2026. This upcoming exhibition will further showcase the artist's work, which is the result of nearly two years of collaborative effort and dialogue. The Art Basel Miami Beach event itself will draw significant attention from collectors, critics, and the public, potentially leading to increased recognition and demand for Benson's art. The use of QR codes for audio accessibility alongside her works suggests an interactive element that could become a trend in future art exhibitions, enhancing viewer engagement. The themes of patriarchy, displacement, and environmental collapse, which Benson frequently explores, are likely to continue to be central to her future projects, offering ongoing commentary on pressing global issues.
Beyond the Headlines
Jane Benson's approach to art, which involves splitting, fracturing, and skewing received sources and structures, delves into deeper ethical and cultural implications. Her re-contextualization of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' moves beyond a simple artistic interpretation, transforming prose into music and revealing embedded scores within the text. This method challenges viewers to reconsider the original work and its relevance in contemporary society, particularly concerning feminist struggles, environmental concerns, and the role of technological innovation. By focusing on the monster's narrative and reframing it within a larger feminist discourse, Benson's work prompts a re-evaluation of historical narratives often overshadowed by patriarchal interpretations. The use of translucent paper and iridescent Plexi in her monumental drawings also adds a layer of visual complexity, inviting a multi-sensory engagement that transcends traditional viewing experiences and encourages a more profound intellectual and emotional connection to the art.
