Mona Takes Charge
In a unique venture, a cafe in Stockholm decided to put an artificial intelligence named 'Mona' at the helm of its daily operations. This AI was tasked
with crucial responsibilities, including managing staff, overseeing inventory levels, and handling various day-to-day tasks that typically fall under a human manager's purview. The human baristas, however, remained on hand to prepare and serve the coffee, creating a fascinating blend of automation and personal service. This innovative approach attracted considerable public interest, drawing in curious patrons, some of whom even engaged with 'Mona' through an in-store telephone, eager to interact with the digital manager. Despite the novelty and attention, the cafe, since its launch in April 2026, has encountered considerable difficulties in achieving financial stability and maintaining smooth operations.
Costly Errors and Red Ink
The ambitious experiment with 'Mona' has been accompanied by significant financial and operational challenges. While the cafe managed to generate approximately $5,700 in revenue, the substantial initial setup costs have severely depleted its original budget of over $21,000, leaving it with less than $5,000. Furthermore, 'Mona' has made several notable operational errors. For instance, it mistakenly ordered an excessive quantity of 6,000 napkins, and it failed to account for bakery deliveries, leading to disruptions in the menu offerings. These recurring issues not only impact the cafe's efficiency but also raise pertinent questions regarding the current capabilities and readiness of artificial intelligence to autonomously manage business operations. Experts have highlighted that such incidents underscore ethical considerations surrounding the deployment of AI in the workplace, with the developers, Andon Labs, characterizing the situation as a 'controlled experiment' to study these very dynamics.
