Introducing AI Skills
Google is rolling out a significant enhancement to its Chrome browser, dubbed 'Skills.' This innovative functionality empowers users to store and retrieve
their preferred artificial intelligence prompts without the need for repetitive typing. This strategic move by Google is part of its larger objective to embed its Gemini AI deeply within Chrome, aiming to establish a stronger presence in the competitive browser landscape against rivals like OpenAI, Perplexity, and The Browser Company. Skills builds upon Gemini's existing abilities, which already enable users to query web page content or generate summaries. Now, with Skills, users can create custom AI commands that are accessible with a single click, significantly improving efficiency for frequently performed tasks.
Crafting and Modifying Skills
Creating and managing your 'Skills' in Chrome is designed to be intuitive. To initiate a new Skill, you simply need to save an AI prompt directly from your chat history. Once saved, these prompts become readily available within Gemini. You can activate a Skill by typing a forward slash symbol ('/') or by clicking the '+' button. When a Skill is triggered, it executes on the current web page you are viewing, and can also be applied to other selected tabs simultaneously. Google has also ensured that these Skills are not static; users have the flexibility to edit them at any time, allowing for adjustments and refinements to better suit evolving needs and preferences.
Pre-built Skill Library
To assist users in adopting the new 'Skills' feature, Google is launching a comprehensive Skills library. This curated collection will provide a variety of pre-defined prompts and workflows tailored for common tasks across diverse categories. These include areas such as enhancing productivity, simplifying shopping experiences, finding recipes, managing personal budgets, and much more. By accessing this library, users can easily incorporate these ready-made Skills into their saved collection within Chrome. Furthermore, each pre-programmed Skill can be personalized to align perfectly with individual requirements, offering a high degree of customization through simple editing of the underlying prompt.
Enabling the Feature
The 'Skills' feature is progressively being made available to all desktop Chrome users who are logged into their Google accounts. However, it's important to note that this functionality is currently limited to browsers where the language is set to English (US). As the rollout continues, it's possible that users in other regions or with different language settings may experience a slight delay before the update appears on their devices. This phased approach ensures a smooth deployment and allows Google to monitor the feature's performance and gather user feedback effectively.
