Monterey County has initiated a groundbreaking pilot program along Highway 68, aiming to alleviate the persistent traffic bottlenecks that have long plagued
this route. This sophisticated system leverages artificial intelligence to dynamically manage traffic flow. Specifically, nine intersections situated between San Benancio Road and Josselyn Canyon Road are now equipped with advanced smart sensors. These sensors continuously monitor real-time traffic conditions, enabling the AI to adjust traffic signal timings automatically. The primary objective is to optimize green light durations, ensuring smoother movement of vehicles, especially during periods of high demand such as peak commuting hours or during major local events.
Pilot Program Economics
This ambitious five-year pilot project represents a significant investment in intelligent infrastructure, with an allocated budget of approximately $1.2 million. This figure stands in stark contrast to the considerably higher costs associated with more conventional traffic management solutions. For instance, the conversion of these same intersections into modern roundabouts is estimated to incur expenses exceeding $200 million. The AI system's efficiency is being rigorously evaluated, with a particular focus on its performance during peak summer events, such as those held at the nearby WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Caltrans, the state's transportation agency, will be instrumental in assessing the system's effectiveness and potential for wider implementation. Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado aptly summarized the forward-thinking nature of this initiative, stating a strong desire to quickly ascertain the viability of AI in traffic management, especially given the potential for substantial cost savings.
