Avocado's Delayed Debut
Meta, the influential technology giant behind platforms like Facebook and Instagram, has announced a revised timeline for its upcoming artificial intelligence
model, codenamed 'Avocado'. Originally slated for a March release, the launch has now been pushed back to May. This postponement stems from internal evaluations that indicated Avocado's performance did not sufficiently rival established competitors, such as Google's Gemini 3.0. This situation highlights the intense pressure Meta faces as it strives to maintain a leading position in the fiercely competitive field of AI development against other major tech players.
Strategic Considerations
In light of Avocado's performance benchmarks, Meta is exploring alternative strategies, including the possibility of licensing Google's advanced Gemini model. Simultaneously, the company is continuing its internal development efforts on another AI project known as 'Watermelon'. The Avocado initiative, spearheaded by Alexandr Wang from TBD Lab, has encountered internal friction and experienced researcher attrition. Despite these challenges, Mark Zuckerberg has expressed confidence in the long-term value of these AI endeavors, even if they are not currently setting industry standards.
