Stormy Skies Ahead
Kolkata and its surrounding regions are on alert for a significant shift in weather patterns over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department
(IMD) has issued a forecast indicating a high probability of rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and the potential for hail. This atmospheric instability is attributed to a low-pressure trough that extends across eastern and northeastern India, influencing the current cloud cover observed on Sunday. Residents should anticipate a period of unpredictable weather, as the pre-monsoon season, characterized by the intense Kalbaishakhi storms, is set to make its presence felt more strongly.
Kalbaishakhi Intensifies
West Bengal is expected to experience a series of Kalbaishakhi storms from Sunday through Thursday. These powerful pre-monsoon phenomena are notorious for their sudden and fierce winds, dramatic lightning displays, and brief but heavy downpours. The IMD specifically noted that the intensity and geographical spread of these storms are predicted to reach their peak on Tuesday and Wednesday. This means that Monday might see partly cloudy skies with a likelihood of rain, but the weather is poised to become more severe as the week progresses, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50 to 60 kmph in Kolkata and nearby areas by Tuesday.
Impact and Precautions
The anticipated severe weather conditions pose several challenges for daily life in Kolkata. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution, particularly during the evening hours when these storms tend to escalate. The increased likelihood of heavy rainfall and strong winds could lead to significant waterlogging in various parts of the city, which may disrupt normal traffic flow and reduce visibility for commuters. Furthermore, the risk of lightning activity necessitates staying indoors and avoiding unnecessary travel during thunderstorms to ensure personal safety. The IMD has placed most of the country under a yellow alert, underscoring the widespread nature of these wet spells.
