What was meant to be a small convenience for tourists in Manali has instead sparked a larger conversation on public behaviour and civic responsibility. A newly installed charging point for phones and gadgets was reportedly turned into a dumping spot within hours of being set up.The incident came to light after a post by Nikhil Saini on X went viral, showing USB ports covered in food wrappers and plastic waste. Reacting to the image, he wrote, “Himachal govt installs a charging point in Manali for tourists to charge phones and gadgets, and within hours people turn it into a dustbin. No Swachh Bharat or any scheme can fix this nation, only an iron fist policy can bring change.”The post quickly triggered a wider debate online, with users divided
over whether the issue stemmed from a lack of infrastructure or poor civic sense. While many criticised the behaviour, others questioned whether adequate dustbins were available in the area.Note: Times now could not independently verify the authenticity of the viral post.
“It’s definitely wrong. Curious if there were enough empty dustbins around? Despite availability, if trash is left anywhere, it’s a serious lack of civic sense!” one user commented.Another added, “If trash is being left due to overflowing bins or lack of them, the administration must increase the number of dustbins so that waste can be disposed of properly.”For some, the incident reinforced concerns about India’s reputation when it comes to cleanliness. “Once I saw a video of a world traveller saying that among all the countries he visited, India was the only one where garbage ends up around the bin, not in it. This just reminded me of that again,” a user wrote. The episode also reignited tensions around tourism in ecologically sensitive regions, with some blaming irresponsible visitor behaviour. “Swachh Bharat fails where entitlement wins. Keep your 'iron fist,' we don’t need mainland chaos ruining our lands too. Fix your mess first,” another comment read.
