Yes, the deep-sea is back with another set of mysteries. Scientists from The Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census, along with collaborators, recently discovered 30 new species from a less explored area of the ocean. It was the South Sandwich Islands’ ‘volcanic calderas, the South Sandwich Trench, and seafloor habitats around Montagu and Saunders Islands’, that was surveyed for the search for new species. As per a press release on the same, the Ocean Census Flagship expedition was reportedly done onboard Schmidt Ocean Institute's recreational vehicle. It was here that the team discovered these species, including ‘Death-Ball sponge’ and ‘Zombie Worms’.‘Death-Ball sponge’ and ‘Zombie Worms’:As per the press release, the sponge-in-question is a bit different than the usual ‘filter-feeding sponges’, as this spherical shaped sponge allegedly had hooks on it– to trap its prey. "The Southern Ocean remains profoundly under-sampled.
