A video showing a birthday celebration turning chaotic on a public road in Surat, Gujarat, has sparked widespread criticism after a man was seen setting off firecrackers amid moving traffic. The incident,
involving a local businessman celebrating his son’s birthday, has raised serious questions about public safety and misuse of shared spaces. The footage, which surfaced on social media, quickly went viral and drew sharp reactions from viewers who expressed shock at the apparent lack of concern for motorists and pedestrians navigating the busy road. The video, filmed at night, captures Deepak Ijardar standing in the middle of a public street while another individual assists him in lighting firecrackers. Vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, can be seen halted nearby, with loud honking filling the air as drivers wait for the road to clear. Despite the disruption, the celebration continues uninterrupted.
In another segment, Deepak is seen lifting both hands while holding large fountain-style firecrackers. Sparks erupt into the air as thick smoke spreads across the road. Onlookers stand just metres away, and vehicles cautiously pass along the side, coming dangerously close to the ongoing fireworks.A separate clip shows firecrackers being burst again directly on the main road, with headlights of passing cars clearly visible. The road appears open to traffic, with no barricades or safety arrangements in place, giving the impression that the celebration was being treated as a private event despite occurring in a public space. When asked about the incident, Deepak Ijardar reportedly dismissed the criticism, saying, “I am a celebrity. What serious crime did I commit if I stopped you for five minutes?" The remark further intensified the backlash online.
Police Takes Action As the footage gained traction, the Dumas Police in Surat took cognisance of the matter. According to reports, the incident took place near the post office in Sultanabad village. After reviewing the video, Police Inspector Shri N. V. Bharwad of Dumas Police Station registered a case against the accused.
Deepak Ijardar was reportedly booked under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for bursting firecrackers on a public road and causing obstruction.
