A tourist in Himachal Pradesh has exposed what he calls a “snow scam” in Manali through a video that has gone viral on social media. He claims that tourist guides in Manali are charging hefty amounts to take visitors to what he describes as a “fake, tiny patch of snow.” The video has alarmed netizens, many of whom expressed concern that ''due to global warming, there is less real snow in Manali.''The video was shared on Instagram by a user identified as Atul Chauhan. In the video, he says, “Finally, main aapko dikhata hoon ki Manali mein kaise snowfall ho rahi hai. Dekhiye saamne, yeh log barf utha kar truck mein laaye hain, yahan daal rahe hain aur phir logon se activity karwayenge.” (“Finally, let me show you how snowfall is happening in Manali. Look
in front of you—these people have brought snow in trucks, are dumping it here, and then making people do activities on it.”) The video was captioned, ''Scam.''
In the video, it can be seen that there is barely any natural snow in the area, with most of the surroundings appearing barren. Some people are seen using shovels to unload snow from trucks and spread the so-called “fake snow” over the land. Despite this, tourists can be seen skating and playing on the artificially spread snow. The video was also reshared on Times Now’s Instagram handle with the caption: “A shocking scam in Manali has gone viral, where tourists were taken to a fake ‘ice point’ created to deceive visitors. Instead of real snow or ice, a staged patch was shown, leaving travellers feeling cheated and disappointed.” The video has since gone viral and garnered mixed reactions online. One user expressing concern wrote, “Actually, the snow will be less and less every year because of excessive deforestation and unchecked construction of tunnels and four- or five-lane roads, wiping out forests, wildlife, and wilderness.” Another user remarked, “Yes, the situation is bad and authorities should do something about it. They charge high rates for snow suits, claiming there will be snow, but tourists end up seeing only a small patch that isn’t worth the money or effort.”
