An Indian calling out a fellow Indian for polluting the country is one thing, and a foreigner flagging problematic behaviour by an Indian towards our own nation is simply something else entirely. As per most of the internet, it was downright “embarrassing”- when an Indian itself failed to value the country’s natural beauty, and it was a tourist instead who had to remind of the same! A video was shared on social media, where a foreign woman was seen confronting an Indian woman for polluting the Ganga Ghat in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. As seen in the video, the Indian began to dig a hole near the Ganga, and then ended up disposing pooja and plastic waste in the sand. To make matters worse, the woman hardly stopped even after being confronted by the foreigner.
Naturally, the incident left the tourist stunned and even "hopeless".“I love India, but sometimes I feel hopeless. A few days ago, I was sitting by Ganga Maa at Sai Ghat when a young woman came and stood directly in front of me. She dug a shallow hole in the sand and started burying pooja waste.. non-organic items, including the plastic bag.I tried to ask her why she was doing it. What sense does it make to come pray to Ganga Maa and then leave your waste here? She just ignored me,” the post read. The foreigner then began to explain how such behaviour is not a pattern just by the older generation, but also by the Indian youth.“I often hear people say that in India, it’s the older generations who never learned differently. But from my years living in Rishikesh, I can say from firsthand experience that young people are continuing these same habits. There’s a complete lack of respect for shared spaces, the environment, and even sacred places. I’m tired of it. I’m tired of going to Ganga Aarti and watching aunties pull huge plastic bags out of their purses, full of artificial religious waste, and dump them into Ganga Maa without a second thought,” the post further read.“Even when I confront people, no one takes me seriously because I’m a foreigner. God forbid I want India to be better, right? I’m a joke to them for wanting them to stop polluting Ganga Maa just because I’m not from this country, right? I love India so much. But honestly, sometimes I feel completely hopeless,” the post concluded. Times Now could not confirm the details of the post.Check out the viral post:“Walks right in front of me, digs a hole, and buries artificial pooja waste, plastic bags and all,” the video read. The post was shared on Instagram by the handle ‘sierraliliann’. It was shared yesterday and pulled more than 34K views from people.
