The debate of ‘normalised workplace toxicity’ in India-- mixed with Delhi’s air pollution-- is back in the headlines, after a rather questionable incident happened with a Delhi woman, which later went viral on social media. Taking to Reddit, she recalled how her boss outright rejected her Work From Home request- despite her mentioning her ‘severe headache’ that was allegedly triggered due to Delhi’s air pollution. In her post, the employee detailed her struggle with severe headaches. She explained that despite her deteriorating health, she continued to fulfil her work commitments, often staying late to complete projects. However, when she requested to work from home for a single day to manage her health, her supervisor dismissed her concerns,
stating that "everyone is suffering from pollution" and that it was difficult to allow Work From Home as other employees were still coming to the office. The employee shared screenshots of her conversation with her boss, revealing a lack of empathy towards her situation. She highlighted ongoing requests for air purifiers that management had ignored, even as the pollution crisis worsened. "We’ve been asking for air purifiers for over a week, and management has refused, citing vague reasons," she stated.Times Now could not confirm the details and the authenticity of the post. Check out the viral post: “Denied WFH despite health issues from Delhi pollution and asked to ‘take Leave and complete work’,” the post read. “I’m (25F) in Delhi and like many others here, I’ve been struggling with severe headache for the past two days likely due to the AQI crisis. Despite this, I’ve been reporting to office regularly. In fact, I stayed back till 8:45 PM yesterday, well beyond my work hours, purely due to project commitments, all while managing my health. Today, I finally requested for Work From Home for just one day -not leave- simply to avoid making things worse and still continue working. My senior replied that “everyone is suffering from pollution” and WFH is “difficult to allow” since others are coming in,” the post read. “Mind you, we’ve been asking for air purifiers for over a week and management has refused, citing vague reasons. Now when the same pollution is affecting our health, they won’t allow even a single day of WFH. And then casually suggest: “take a day off and still work” which is just absurd. It’s beyond me how basic health concerns are being brushed aside like this. Is it too much to expect empathy when you’re literally offering to work through sickness, just from a safer environment?” the post concluded.
