Words like ‘mystical, enchanting, ethereal’ and such– are NOT EVEN ENOUGH to describe pictures of Kinnaur’s Raulane Festival that are circulating on social media. For those confused, you must have seen
images of men in traditional attires- maroon masked face with shawl and blazer- either dancing or celebrating at a hilly setup. Yes, that’s the one- a celebration of fairies and deities that is happening in Himachal Pradesh! Well, it turns out that the festival is so old that even locals do not know when it began– yet it’s new to almost the rest of India, as only recently the said pictures went viral on social media. As soon as the images went viral, it wasn't just their religious value that left many engaged, but also the attire itself that was quick to turn into an inspiration. From some calling it a 'perfect poster for mystery thriller’ to some saving the pictures as their phone wallpaper, and from many using the same images for adventure games like Assassin's Creed to others simply going above and beyond with their editing skills- you name it and netizens tried it all.The mystical beings that this festival celebrates are called Sauni. As per local beliefs, Sauni are fairies who descended from celestial realms. As per locals, they are described as ‘soft-footed and radiant’, who love to wander near forests, especially around snow. It’s believed that these spirits guard, guide, and protest villagers during winters. The festival is celebrated at Kinnaur’s historic Nagin Narayan temple at the end of winter. People- two men- are chosen to act as bride and groom, where they are required to cover their faces with masks or heavy jewelry- in order to separate their individual identities from the fairies they are representing. Coming back to the internet’s reactions, let’s take a look:“Raulane : The festival of the fairies,” a user said.
