In the last few years, there has been a term that is floating around on social media- A LOT– a term that wouldn't have made sense just a few years ago. However, the same has become so common that it has even started becoming ‘relatable’ to people; ‘taxi mafia’. Taking to social media, a Hyderabad man narrated an incident on Reddit, which went viral. An airport drop that was supposed to be rather regular– turned into drama and anxiety after the man started booking a cab to Hyderabad airport for his 7 AM flight. As per the post, the man was trying to book a cab at 4 AM, only to get demeans like ‘Rs 5,000’ as cab fare. As per the Redditor, as soon as the taxi driver realised that the destination was the airport, he began to ask for ‘extra’ money.
Similar interactions broke out with other cab drivers too, after which the man ultimately ended up asking his friend for help. As soon as the post went viral, netizens began to react. Most called it a ‘scam’, while some commented the term ‘taxi mafia’ in the comment section. As per netizens, such demands by taxi drivers is not exactly new, especially when destinations are far away. Times Now could not confirm the details and the authenticity of the post.

“Anyone else facing crazy cab prices to Hyderabad airport early in the morning?” the post read. “I had a flight at 7 AM today. I booked a cab at 4:00 in the morning. The cab driver called and asked where I was headed. I told him, ‘Airport.’ He sounded surprised and then said, ‘Give some extra accordingly.’ I replied, ‘I’ll pay according to the app fare.’ He then said something about the routes being changed and claimed we might get stuck, and he asked for ₹5,000. It was the same story with other cab drivers — they were quoting anywhere between ₹2,000 and ₹6,000,” the post read. “I didn’t understand what was going on, so I asked my friend to drop me instead. There was some traffic on the way, but he dropped me off quickly. Is there any issue going on with cabs to the airport, or are these drivers just trying to extort extra money from customers because they know people won’t find another cab immediately?” the post further read.
