A quirky clip from Dalian Sunasia Ocean World in China recently took over social media, capturing what looked like a heroic act by a beluga whale. In the footage, a man standing in the beluga interaction
zone, a designated no-smoking area, casually lights a cigarette while holding a white plastic bag. Before staff can intervene, the whale suddenly launches a stream of water that hits the cigarette with perfect accuracy, stunning the man and drawing widespread amusement online. The video was shared with the caption: "At Dalian Ocean World, a man ignored staff warnings and kept smoking. Right then, a beluga whale from behind sprayed a water jet—bullseye!—putting out his cigarette in the coolest way possible."
Social media users loved the moment. One commented, "Look at how PROUD he is of himself!" Another wrote, "Imagine getting disciplined by a whale because you can't follow simple instructions. Embarrassing behaviour, elite correction. The whale said not in my house."A third viewer added, "Belugas' precision stems from their advanced echolocation and trainability, per marine biology research." Some sceptics even suspected the clip was AI-generated.
Was the Beluga “Intervention” Genuine?Despite its viral popularity, the dramatic scene wasn’t spontaneous. The Beijing News later clarified that the entire sequence was staged as part of preparations for a fire-safety awareness video. The man, the staffer, and everyone else in the frame were employees, and multiple rehearsed takes were shot that day. Authorities in Dalian also confirmed that the scenario was scripted, as reported by the Global Times. This isn’t the first instance of a beluga being featured in a choreographed fire-safety demonstration; similar promotional videos from other aquariums in Liaoning province have surfaced in the past.
