A post shared on Reddit has sparked widespread discussion after a user claiming to be a former Nvidia engineer revealed that he retired at just 34 and is now travelling the world full-time. Describing
the announcement as a “personal flex,” the user detailed an extraordinary journey from poverty to early financial independence.According to the post, the individual grew up in extreme financial difficulty in a small village in India, where his family often struggled to afford basic necessities. He described a childhood shaped by hardship and uncertainty, before his entry into the semiconductor industry dramatically changed his life’s trajectory.Summing up his journey, the Reddit user wrote, “From BPL background to retiring at 34. Traveling across the world now with a goal to explore all 195 countries (32 done).”He shared that his education until Class 12 was completed at a government school, after which he pursued engineering at what he called a Tier-3 government college. He credited his academic focus and graduating as a gold medallist for helping him land a role at Nvidia.Elaborating on his family’s struggles, the user recalled his father’s early work conditions, writing, “Dad worked at STD PCO of uncle for meagre Rs 1500 per month for good 7 to 8 (early 2000s) years before getting Rs 4000 job in other shop.”
The user said he spent around a decade at Nvidia, during which he built wealth largely through company stock. Explaining his decision to leave, he wrote, “Worked there [Nvidia] for 10 years.. Left it in 2022 after accumulating just enough stocks even though it was doing great.”After exiting Nvidia, he briefly continued in the semiconductor industry, joining two more companies to expand his experience. Eventually, he decided to step away from corporate life altogether. “Joined two more Semiconductor companies for additional experience, left my 1Cr+ job at another top Semiconductor after realizing things can't get better than this,” he stated. The Redditor also revealed that he and his wife are now travelling internationally as a dual-income-no-kids couple, keeping expenses low by maximising travel rewards. “Accumulated more than million hotel/flight miles with top credit cards and now traveling for no cost across the world as a DINK couple,” he wrote.Reflecting on his past, he described the achievement as deeply personal, adding, “Given the horrible childhood and poverty, this feels like a personal win for sure! Be your own Santa!”The post drew a wide range of reactions from fellow Reddit users. While many congratulated him and found the story inspiring, others cautioned against viewing it as a typical or easily replicable path. One commenter noted, “Congratulations on the achievement, but this seems more like the NVIDIA gravy train that helped early financial gains. Good for you. For others, keep grinding. Such cases are very rare.”Another wrote, “Congratulations. Not many get to retire at 34. I wish for something similar, thanks for the inspiration.”Others focused on the emotional aspect of the story, with one user saying, “Be your own Santa. The best line I ever read,” while another added, “Amazing journey, bro! Kudos to you and your family’s resilience!”
