Most people are remembered for what they do. Joseph McGrail-Bateup is making headlines for how loudly he can do it. The Canberra resident has officially earned a place in the record books after setting a new Guinness World Record for the loudest shout by an individual male.According to Guinness World Records, Joseph recorded a shout of 122.4 dB (C-weighted) in May, surpassing the previous benchmark. The volume is comparable to that of a rock concert and even approaches the noise produced by a military jet during take-off.The achievement is particularly fitting given Joseph's profession. Better known as Lord Joseph, he serves as the official town crier for Canberra and Queanbeyan, a role that often requires him to project his voice above the roar

of sports cars and large crowds at public events.Joseph was appointed Canberra's official town crier in 2017 and regularly attended car shows, fetes and community gatherings. His interest in the craft deepened after joining the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Australian Town Criers in 2022, where he began competing in town crying contests.

(Video Credits - Guinness World Records) Reflecting on his early success, he said, “In the first year I managed to take some places in the event, but in 2024 I took first place away for the loudest cry at 98 dB.”Town crying competitions traditionally begin with the words “oyez, oyez”, but Joseph decided to take a different approach when pursuing the world record.“The words that are used in these competitions are ‘oyez, oyez’. At the beginning of this year I was wondering what I could do that was a little bit different, so not being unfamiliar with Guinness World Records – I am also a former holder for archery – I looked up shouting and here I am, six months later with the record.”He revealed that selecting the right word was a team effort involving his daughter.“My daughter and I worked together to find the best word to hit the decibels. The previous word was ‘quiet’ but that wasn’t quite loud enough and we ended up settling for the word ‘now’.”The latest achievement marks Joseph's return to the Guinness World Records after previously securing a title in archery. In 2019, he set the record for the fastest time to shoot 10 arrows into a 40 cm target from a distance of 18 metres, completing the feat in 1 minute and 0.03 seconds.Despite his remarkable vocal ability, Joseph admits the job occasionally takes a toll.He confessed: “Have I ever lost my voice through shouting or town crying? Yes, I have. Generally it’s after competitions or a day where I’m doing a car show and out there yelling all the time and yelling over sports cars is quite an interesting thing, but it’s a lot of fun and sometimes I can be louder than the sports cars sitting next to me.”Interestingly, Joseph says he was far from outspoken during his childhood and never imagined he would one day hold a record for shouting.He said: “When I was a kid I didn’t really have a loud voice, I was very shy, withholding all that stuff until I left school and I joined the theatre. It was very clear then that I needed to pipe up, make myself loud. So, I trained in the theatre where you didn’t use microphones or anything like that and I got loud and as the years went by, louder,'' as quoted by The Guinness World Records. His journey from a shy child to the world's loudest man is a reminder of how dedication and practice can transform an unlikely talent into a record-breaking achievement.
