Every day, Akash Saroj weaves through Delhi’s traffic for nearly 12 hours, delivering meals across the city. But beyond earning a living, the job has become his way of honouring a deeply personal promise.
From his home in the Bhalaswa slum area, Akash regularly sets aside a large share of his modest earnings to help those struggling around him.His journey into full-time food delivery began about two and a half years ago, but it wasn’t his original plan. Akash is a trained dancer who has been learning the craft since 2014 and once dreamed of becoming a choreographer. To support himself, he initially worked part-time as a delivery rider while continuing to practise dance.A Phone Call Changed His Life - Life changed abruptly when he received a call from Vijayawada informing him that his father was critically ill. He borrowed money from friends and rushed to be with him, but arrived too late. Recalling that period in an interview with The Better India, Akash said the loss reshaped his priorities.According to him, his father’s final words urged him to always help others, even if wealth never came his way. With no other earning member in the family and medical bills pushing him into a debt of nearly Rs 3 lakh, as reported by India Today, Akash took up food delivery as a full-time job.
