A simple household item has unexpectedly become the centre of a viral story online, after a woman from India’s Northeast shared how it helped her build a better rapport with her landlord in Delhi. In a widely circulated Instagram clip, user @shellcopter narrated how gifting a traditional jhaadu, a broom sourced from Arunachal Pradesh, ended up transforming their equation. She pointed out that brooms commonly used in the Northeast are noticeably sturdier and last much longer than those typically found in Delhi.Recounting her early days in the capital, the woman said she was unimpressed with the quality of locally available brooms, describing them as thin, fragile, and quick to wear out after just a few uses. By comparison, she said, the jhaadus
from her home state are thicker, more durable, and built to last.On one of her visits back home, her mother packed vegetables, fermented food, and a few traditional jhaadus for her to carry back. Interestingly, instead of offering the food to the landlord, her mother suggested gifting one of the brooms instead.According to her, what started as a simple suggestion ended up working far better than expected. “I kid you not, it changed everything," she said in the video, adding that her landlord was thrilled with the gift. She also mentioned that now, whenever she travels home, her landlord requests another jhaadu and even offers to pay for it.Looking back, she said that items brought from home, especially food, don’t always resonate with everyone due to differing tastes and cultural preferences. In contrast, she feels that something as practical as a broom can effortlessly create a connection.“A jhaadu is universal. Also, gifting someone something from your home without thinking about anything in return, I think it is one of the most underrated things someone can do for you. So if you’re from the Northeast and you want a better relationship with your landlord, give them a Jhaadu. Trust me on this one," she said. The post was captioned, “Try this next time." The clip quickly gained traction online, with many users finding the anecdote both relatable and amusing.
