Gone are the days when a job with a “Rs 2 lakh salary per month” used to be something only the “rich” could achieve– as based on this 26-year-old Bengaluru techie’s Reddit post– it seems like even people with such a high salary no longer “feel rich” in India anymore. Taking to social media, the techie ranted about his finances, stating how even a Rs 2 lakh salary job with Rs 0 debt is making him feel “poor”. We grew up pretty poor, like our household income was never more than ₹6-7k until I was 21, which is when I got my first job. After I started earning, I made sure my parents stopped working; they're retired now at our home. I moved them into a 2BHK in my hometown, and I live in my own 2BHK in Bangalore,” the post read. The techie then moved on to breaking down his expenses, savings and insurances, which were rather impressive. The Redditor also talked about his ‘luxurious’ expenses, including expenditure on a MacBook, phone and such. “Here's what I do with my money every month: I put ₹30k into mutual funds, another ₹10k into FDs or RDs, and ₹10k into gold chits. I also sent ₹15-20k home to my parents. Then there are all my rental and other expenses, which are around ₹25k. Since I started earning in 2021, I've saved ₹4 lakh in stocks, ₹2 lakh in FDs, and about ₹2-2.5 lakh in gold. Plus, I have ₹6 lakh just sitting in my salary account,” the post continued. “Some of the bigger things I've bought with this money include a ₹60k scooter last year for commuting in Bangalore. I also furnished my parents' home with everything – a TV, sofa, fridge, kitchen supplies, rugs, you name it. For myself, I got a MacBook M2 for ₹70k and a OnePlus phone for ₹25k. This year, I bought health insurance for my parents for ₹30k/yr and life insurance for myself, which costs ₹24k/yr,” the post further read. “I've checked all the boxes for a stress-free life, but I'm still stressed. I'm in Bangalore, I eat out, go out with friends, have occasional parties, and take trips with friends. But still, I don't feel content; I don't feel rich," the man added.The man then claimed that he feels “satisfied” with what he has “achieved”, but still “never feels rich”. Ultimately, the techie listed the future expenses that he is calculating, citing his "marriage plans”.“Honestly, I feel satisfied with what I've achieved, maybe even a bit accomplished sometimes, but I never feel rich. Now, I'm looking at getting married this year, which will probably cost me at least ₹10 lakh. Before the wedding, I wanted to buy a car for under ₹3-4 lakh,” the post read.The Redditor then began to compare his lifestyle with that of his friends, where he claimed that most of his peers are earning way less than him, yet are “happy” and "content” in their lives. The man also claimed that his life is “very stressful”, despite leading a decent life that many only dream about. “At 26, it feels so strange to feel poor despite earning this much. The worst is when I go back to my hometown and see my friends who do manual labor or drive autos. They seem happy and content, and an extra ₹1000 makes them feel rich,” the man said. “Honestly, a lot has been on my mind these past few months. I know for a fact that I'm complaining about something a huge majority would kill to have, but this is genuinely how I feel right now,” the post concluded. The post soon went viral, pulling many reactions. Most advised the man to “not look for happiness in assets”, while others advised him to “not feel guilty” in spending his own money.
