A post about wealth, freedom and what comes after financial success has sparked wide discussion online, after an NRI professional shared his reflections on returning to India with early retirement secured.Writing
on Reddit, the man said he came back to India after a long and lucrative career in the US, claiming to have built a net worth of over Rs 100 crore. In a detailed post, he traced his journey from a modest middle-class upbringing to achieving financial independence far earlier than he had ever imagined."Coming from a normal middle-class family, started at a services company, moved to core Tech, then to the US, invested and grew our portfolios and finally returned to India recently. The last few years have been phenomenal for our stock portfolio, and we are at $12m++/ INR 100Cr++ now - a number I never thought I would see," he wrote. Now settled back in India and no longer employed, he described his life as free yet unexpectedly complicated. While the absence of deadlines and pressure feels liberating, he admitted that the lack of routine and social structure has brought its own challenges. Living in a gated community, his days revolve around health, leisure and family time. He spends hours playing sports and working out, reading, watching television serials, and being with his spouse and children. At times, he said, he barely steps outside the community, choosing comfort and familiarity over venturing out. With household help, cooks and coaches easily available, everyday life has become smooth and largely effortless.
Before settling into this rhythm, the man shared that he spent months indulging in old interests and travel. He binge-watched classic shows and films, replayed favourite video games, and travelled extensively across Asia and Europe. He also went on long biking and hiking trips, often cutting himself off from the world for days to fully slow down.Yet, alongside the comfort, he acknowledged a growing sense of boredom and emptiness. Still, the idea of returning to a demanding tech career holds little appeal for him."Nowadays I do get bored sometimes - but then I cannot imagine grinding at a tech company. I still need to figure out what to do with my life, but then in the larger scheme of things I wonder if really does matter - the happiness I get spending time with my family and myself - I am okay to trade off for any promotions and titles," he added. The post, shared on the r/FatFIREIndia subreddit, drew strong engagement, with users weighing in on both the achievement and the emotional realities of early retirement. One commenter noted, "The bored part comes quickly . Sometimes i think work is almost daycare for adults when you have achieved everything else."Another advised, "Congrats on reaching FI and becoming retired. Two cents - pick up something you think you care about, don't worry about changing the world or even making impact. Learn it, do it, get better at it, and write about it, put it out there. Focus on the process, if someone is interested and want to learn they will naturally gravitate towards you. If nothing, you get to do what you think you like, and actually like it."
