A video featuring a Blinkit delivery executive from Uttarakhand has ignited a nationwide conversation on the realities of gig work after it went viral on social media. The delivery partner, known as Thapliyal Ji, shared details of his daily income and work schedule while operating in Delhi, drawing sharp reactions online.Recorded in September, the clip shows the delivery worker breaking down his earnings for the day using screenshots from the Blinkit app. He revealed that after completing 28 deliveries over a 15-hour shift, he earned Rs 763 in total. One detail that particularly caught viewers’ attention was his final delivery of the day, for which he was paid just Rs 15.83. Based on the figures shown, his average income stood at Rs 52 per hour,
prompting fresh concerns over the long-term viability of such work.
As the video crossed 7 million views, social media users began questioning the imbalance between the hours put in and the compensation received. Several commenters described the situation as “exploitation of cheap human labour,” reflecting growing unease about pay structures in the gig economy. The debate widened further after AAP MP Raghav Chadha shared a screenshot from the viral clip on X. Referring to the issue as “systemic exploitation hidden behind apps and algorithms,” Chadha argued that India’s digital growth cannot come at the cost of underpaid and overworked gig workers. He added that fair wages, humane working hours, and social security must remain non-negotiable for those employed on digital platforms. Together, the viral video and the reactions it triggered have once again pushed the spotlight onto the conditions faced by gig workers, intensifying calls for companies and policymakers to rethink how platform-based labour is regulated in India.
