Social media feeds are currently witnessing an unusual yet deeply emotional wave, one built around a simple phrase: “I love you, papa.” What started as a moment in comedian Samay Raina’s recent YouTube special, Still Alive, has now transformed into a widespread online movement, prompting people to express affection toward their fathers, often for the first time on camera. The trend, now widely referred to as the Samay Raina Challenge, has taken over platforms with videos of peole approaching their dads and saying “I love you,” capturing reactions that range from awkward smiles to heartfelt responses. What began as a personal appeal during Raina’s performance has quickly grown into a larger conversation about emotional openness and parent-child
relationships.
The origin of the challenge lies in a segment from Still Alive, where Raina urged young people, especially men, to break the emotional distance many share with their fathers. Speaking candidly in a mix of Hindi and English, he reflected on how suppressing feelings can leave individuals “emotionally stunted,” unable to express love even within their own families.“Your father loves you just as much as your mother does,” further adding, “You are the educated ones. Go and break that wall.” That message struck a chord with audiences.Soon after, social media was flooded with similar clips, some lighthearted, others deeply moving. In many, fathers appeared surprised or unsure how to respond, while others reciprocated the affection, highlighting a generational gap in emotional expression that users said they were only beginning to acknowledge. On Still Alive show, Raina also opened up about his own relationship with his father. He recalled a difficult period during a controversy when his father reassured him, saying, “Your show is because of you, you are not because of the show.” The statement, he shared, shifted his outlook entirely. His reply, ''I love you, dad,'' became the emotional anchor of his message. The special Still Alive episode was released on April 7, where he also spoke about his father’s sacrifices, including years of hard work to support his education at the Hyderabad Public School, something that once seemed financially unattainable.
