This year, the festival of Dhanteras will be celebrated on 18 October 2025. It marks the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. On this day, special
significance is given to the worship of Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi. Every year, on the Trayodashi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, the Yama Deepam is lit. Lighting this lamp in the evening of Dhanteras is a tradition followed to ward off the fear of untimely death. It is the only day in the year when Lord Yama is worshipped and a lamp is lit in his honour. According to Drik Panchang, "This ritual is known as Deepdan for Yamraj. The Deepak is lit outside home during Sandhya time. It is believed that Deepdan pleases Lord Yama and He protects family members from any accidental death."
When to Light the Yama Deepam on Dhanteras
On Dhanteras day, 18 October 2025, the Yama Deepam should be lit during the evening muhurat, between 05:59 PM to 07:12 PMMethod of Lighting the Yama Deepam
The southern direction is believed to be associated with Lord Yama, so the diya should be lit facing south. The Yama Deepam should be lit up during the Pradosh Kaal.Make a large diya (lamp) using wheat flour. Prepare four long wicks from clean cotton, place them in the diya, and fill it with mustard oil. The wicks represent the four directions. Offer roli, Akshat, and flowers to the diya, after lighting it. The important point that you must remember is to ensure that the diya is placed near the main entrance of your home, facing the south direction, on a small heap of grains or puffed rice.
Finally, chant “Om Yam Devaya Namah” and bow towards the south in reverence to Lord Yama.
