What is the story about?
Raksha Bandhan, the beautiful festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, will be celebrated later this week. On this day, a sister ties
a rakhi on her brother's wrist and prays for his wellbeing, while the brother offers gifts and vows lifelong protection. However, beyond the usual sweets, many sisters also follow small rituals and remedies which are believed to bring their brothers good health, success and protection from harm. Here are some of the most common remedies that can be done this year.
Choose The Right Direction And Seating
As per reports, multiple astrologers suggest that where the brother sits matters the most. According to one guide, the brother should sit facing either east or north during the ceremony, since facing east is believed to attract vitality, good health and positive energy from the sun. This small adjustment is said to make the rakhi's protective energy work better.

Tie Rakhi On The Right Wrist
There is also a belief around which wrist to use. It is believed that tying the rakhi on the right wrist is thought to prevent the "Pitta" or fire element in the brother's body from becoming excessive, which in turn is believed to reduce fear and poor health.
The Alum Remedy For Negative Energy
One of the more unusual remedies doing the rounds this year involves a common kitchen item - alum or phitkari. As per the remedy, sisters can place a piece of phitkari in their brother's pocket or wallet briefly before the ceremony, and once the puja is done, throw it into a corner of the garden. This is believed to absorb negative "nazar."Chanting The Raksha Mantra
Reciting a mantra while tying the thread is considered important too. The traditional verse goes: "Yena baddho balī rājā dānavendro mahābalaḥ, tena tvām abhibadhnāmi rakṣe mā cala mā cala" - a chant that essentially asks the sacred thread to hold firm protection.Remedies For Sibling Harmony
For sisters and brothers who have drifted apart or had disagreements, there is a suggested fix. It is recommended that if there is long-standing tension between siblings, they can offer a red sweet like bundi ladoo to Lord Hanuman together, and also donate yellow grains to those in need. Separately, for the brother's health and long life, one remedy suggests donating white food items such as milk and rice on this day. When Is Raksha Bandhan?
According to the Hindu calendar, the Purnima Tithi begins at 09:08 AM on August 27, 2026, and ends at 09:48 AM on August 28, 2026. Many people also wait for an auspicious window before tying the rakhi, since the Bhadra period is considered unfit for the ceremony. This year, there is good news for everyone. The Bhadra period gets over before sunrise itself, so there is no need to wait for it to end during the day. This means the entire morning window is free for the celebration.
