Vat Savitri Vrat is of great importance for Hindu married women. The fast is observed for the long life of the husband and a happy married life. According
to legend, Goddess Savitri brought her husband Satyavan back to life from the clutches of Yama, the god of death, beneath a banyan tree. Since then, this fast has been observed by married women to pray for their husband’s long life, enduring marital bliss, and the blessing of children. On this day, women dress in full traditional bridal finery (solah shringar), perform rituals around the banyan (vat) tree, and listen to the story of Savitri and Satyavan. After the puja, offerings of suhaag items are donated to other women.
When Is Vat Savitri Vrat?
As per Panchang, this year, it will be celebrated on May 16. Brahma Muhurta will be from 4:07 AM to 4:48 AM. The Vijay Muhurta will then be from 2:04 PM to 3:28 PM. According to Drik Panchang, "Most of the festivals in Amanta and Purnimanta lunar calendar fall on the same day. Purnimanta calendar is followed in North Indian states, mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana. In rest of the states usually Amanta lunar calendar is followed." However, according to Purnimanta calendar Vat Savitri Vrat is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya which coincides with Shani Jayanti. In Amanta calendar Vat Savitri Vrat, which is also called as Vat Purnima Vrat, is observed during Jyeshtha Purnima. Hence married women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and southern Indian states observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days later than that of North Indian women.
