The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to the fifth form of Goddess Durga, known as Maa Skandamata. When Goddess Parvati became the mother of Lord Skanda -
also known as Lord Kartikeya - is when she became Goddess Skandamata. The colour of day 5 is green.

Goddess Skandamata's vahan is the lion and she is often picturised caarying baby Murugan - Lord Kartikeya - in her lap. She is depicted with four hands and carries lotus flowers in her upper two hands. While Lord Kartikeya is balanced on her third hand, her fourth hand is reserved for the Abhaya Mudra. She sits on a lotus flower and is hence also known as Goddess Padmasana. Those who worship this form of Goddess Parvati also have the good fortune of worshipping Lord Kartikeya. Maa Skandamata was the form assumed by Goddess Parvati to protect her son Lord Kartikeya, who was born to destroy the demon Tarakasura.
