What is the story about?
Raksha Bandhan, the festival that celebrates the sacred bond between brothers and sisters, will be celebrated this year on August 9, 2025. On this day,
sisters tie a rakhi (decorative sacred thread) around their brothers’ wrists while praying for their long life and prosperity. In return, brothers promise to protect their sisters and offer gifts as a token of their love and commitment. But have you ever noticed that while tying a rakhi, sisters often are asked to tie three knots? There is, in fact, a reason behind it that is rooted in spirituality.
The Meaning Behind The Three Knots
According to Hindu scriptures, the three knots represent the Tridev—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva)—the three supreme deities of creation, preservation, and destruction. Each knot signifies the invocation of their blessings and protection for the brother:First knot (Brahma): Symbolises creation and the beginning of a sacred bond.
Second knot (Vishnu): Represents protection and balance in life.
Third knot (Shiva): Stands for strength and the destruction of negativity.
By tying these three knots, the sister is believed to be offering her brother a shield of divine protection, invoking the powers of the Tridev to keep him safe from harm.
Raksha Bandhan Shubh Mahurat 2025
In 2025, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Saturday, August 09th. As per the Hindu calendar, this festival falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan (Sawan). The Purnima tithi begins at 2:12 pm on August 08th and it ends at 1:24 pm on August 09th, 2025.
The shubh muhurat to perform the rakhi tying ceremony on August 09th is between 5:47 am to 1:24 pm according to Drik Panchang. The given time period is free from the shadow of Bhadra and is considered auspicious for the ceremony, so you can plan your festivities accordingly.
