One of North India's most loved winter festivals, Lohri, is celebrated every year on January 13. The festival has many meanings and stories, with connections
to the Duggar and Punjab regions. Different Traditions That People Follow On Lohri Some people think Lohri is named after Loi, the wife of Sant Kabir, because in rural Punjab, Lohri is pronounced as Lohi. Others believe the name comes from the word 'loh', which refers to a thick iron plate used for baking chapattis during community feasts. Another story suggests that Holika and Lohri were sisters. While Holika died in the Holi fire, Lohri survived. Eating sesame seeds (til) and jaggery (rorhi) is an important part of the celebration. It’s possible that the words "til" and "rorhi" combined to form "tilorhi," which later became Lohri. Groups of youngsters start collecting logs for the bonfire 15 days before the festival. They also collect grains, jaggery, and money which are later divided among all. Songs related to Lohri are sung and people dance around the bonfire and if their wishes are not fulfilled then they smash these clay pots and clay stove till their demands are met.
