Today, which is day 6 of Chaitra Navratri, we worship Maa Katyayani, the sixth and the most fierce form of Goddess Durga. She is often worshipped as a warrior
goddess, and is believed to rule the planet Brihaspati. The colour of this day is orange. According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Parvati took the form of Maa Katyayani to destroy Mahishasura. It is in this avatar that she is called Mahishasurmardini and worshipped in Bengal as part of the Durga Puja. Her name Katyayani also supposedly comes from the name of sage Katya, in whose home Goddess Parvati is sait to have been born. She is shown riding a lion, and depicted with four hands. She carried a lotus in one hand, a sword in another, and keeps her other two hands in Abhaya and Varada Mudras. Maa Katyayani Vrat Katha As per mythology, a sage named Kat lived in a forest. His son was named Katya. Maharishi Katyayana was born in the Katya clan, but he had no children. Therefore, he desired to receive a daughter from the Goddess Durga. For this, he performed severe penance. Pleased with Maharishi Katyayana's rigorous penance, Goddess Paramba fulfilled his wish, and the Goddess appeared as his daughter. Being the daughter of Maharishi Katyayana, this form of Goddess Durga was named Katyayani. She was a highly virtuous woman. She slew the demon Mahishasura, freeing the three worlds from his terror. It is said that during Navratri, any devotee who sincerely worships Goddess Katyayani will have all their wishes fulfilled.
