The Purnima (full moon) of the Kartik month happens to be one of the most significant day in Hinduism. This full moon day is known as Kartik Purnima. Today
is that day. It is believed that observing rituals such as snan (bath in sacred river), daan (charity) and offering Deepdaan (the ritual of lighting earthen lamps) on this day brings eternal blessings. The day is also celebrated as Dev Deepawali and Guru Nanak Jayanti. According to mythology, on Kartik Purnima, Lord Vishnu descends to Earth to visit Goddess Lakshmi and showers his devotees with blessings. - Avoid Tamasic Foods: On this sacred day, devotees must refrain from consuming tamasic foods such as meat, fish, eggs, garlic, onion, and alcohol. Such foods are believed to disturb spiritual purity. Observing Brahmacharya (celibacy) is also encouraged to maintain spiritual discipline.
- Do Not Turn Away The Needy: If someone seeks help or visits your home on Kartik Purnima, do not send them away empty-handed.
- Take A Holy Dip: Bathe early in the morning if possible.
- Light Diyas: In the evening, light earthen lamps (diyas) near your house entrance, tulsi plant and water bodies.
- Perform Tulsi Puja: Offer flowers, water, and light to the Tulsi plant.
- Avoid Cutting Hair: As per traditional belief, don't cut your hair, nails or shave on this day.
- Avoid Sleeping During the Day: Use the day for spiritual activities like prayer and reading scriptures.
It is believed that lighting earthen lamps on Kartik Purnima brings peace, prosperity and happiness into one’s life. Lighting a mustard oil or ghee diya remove negativity from homes. According to beliefs, the ritual of Deepdaan grants peace to the souls of our ancestors.
