What is the story about?
On the Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha, Kalashtami is observed by Hindus. It's a day when Lord Kaal Bhairav is worshipped. He is the fierce form of Lord Shiva,
and is revered across not only Hindu traditions but also Jain and Buddhist. Kaal Bhairav is also known as the "Kotwal of Kashi" (Varanasi). In fact it's believed that one should first worship him, after darshan at Kashi Vishwanath. He is worshipped not just as the "Kotwal of Kashi" but also as the guardian of time and protector against the evil.

- Like most Hindu puja rituals, one must wake up early, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
- Take a vow of fasting, while you remember Kaal Bhairav, and if possible do visit a temple.
- At home, you can also set up his idol or picture and perform the puja of Kaal Bhairav.
- During the puja, offer incense, a lamp, flowers, and naivedya. Recite the mantras of Lord Shiva and Kaal Bhairav.
- Reciting the Bhairav Chalisa on this day is considered highly auspicious.
- Devotees observing the fast should remain disciplined throughout the day and break the fast after performing the evening or night puja.
Special Remedies to Perform on Kalashtami
- It's believed that performing certain rituals on Kalashtami are beneficial.
- Feeding a dog on this day is considered very auspicious, as the dog is regarded as the vahana of Kaal Bhairav.
- Light a diya mustard oil in front of Lord Kaal Bhairav and chant the mantra “Om Kalbhairavaya Namah”. Make sure when you chant, you focus, and be in that moment.
- Reciting the Bhairav Chalisa with devotion brings mental peace, and gradually the difficulties in life start to diminish.
