In Hinduism, the full moon day, known as Purnima Tithi, is considered sacred and auspicious. One of the most important rituals performed by Hindus on this
day is that of snan (ritual bathing) and daan (charity). On Purnima, people take a dip in sacred rivers such as Ganga (Ganges). There are many spiritual merits associated with performing these rituals. While every full moon in the Hindu calendar holds its own significance, the full moon of the month of Ashadha has its own importance. It is on this day that Guru Purnima is celebrated, which falls on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha. On the day of Guru Purnima not just the deities are worshipped but it's also a day for expressing gratitude towards one’s gurus and teachers. The day is also known as Vyas Purnima, as it commemorates the birth anniversary of Maharishi Krishna Dwaipayana Ved Vyasa. The Purnima Tithi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha will begin on 28 July 2026 at 6:18 pm and will continue until 8:05 pm on 29 July 2026. According to the Udaya Tithi, Guru Purnima will be observed on 29 July 2026. It is also known as Ashadha Purnima. Significance of Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is regarded as a celebration of the Guru-Shishya (teacher-disciple) tradition. According to Sadhguru, "Gu means darkness, Ru means dispeller. One who dispels your darkness is a Guru." On this day, people honour their spiritual, social, or academic gurus, seek their blessings, and express gratitude for their guidance. It is believed that on the full moon day of Ashadha, Maharishi Ved Vyas was born. By composing the Vedas, Puranas, and epics like the Mahabharata, he laid a deep intellectual foundation for Sanatan Dharma.
