The Fatal Meal
In a shocking turn of events, four members of a family in Mumbai's Pydhonie area lost their lives under mysterious circumstances following the consumption
of watermelon. The victims, identified as 40-year-old Abdullah Dokadia, his 35-year-old wife Nasreen Dokadia, and their daughters Ayesha, 16, and Zainab, 13, had shared a meal with five other relatives on the night of April 25. The tragedy unfolded hours later, around 1:30 AM, when the family ate watermelon, leading to their untimely deaths within the subsequent 12-hour period. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community and initiated a thorough police investigation into the cause of this profound loss.
Police Investigation Deepens
Following the grim discovery, Mumbai Police conducted a detailed search of the deceased's residence, focusing on potential remnants of rat poison, as preliminary findings suggested zinc phosphide consumption as the cause of death. Despite thorough scrutiny, officers reported finding no traces of the deadly substance. The only item recovered from the second floor was a rat repellent, which, upon examination, was identified as a herbal concoction and did not contain zinc phosphide. This discovery has complicated the investigation, shifting the focus to other possibilities. Relatives indicated that rat infestation was a common issue in their building, with the family employing various deterrents like repellents and glue pads to manage the problem.
Exploring Avenues of Contamination
With the initial search yielding no direct evidence of rat poison within the home, investigators are now considering multiple scenarios. A senior officer involved in the probe stated that the remaining possibilities include accidental poisoning within the household or contamination occurring earlier in the supply chain. To gather more information, the police plan to record statements from Abdullah Dokadia's four brothers and two sisters, who reside in the vicinity. This expanded line of inquiry aims to uncover any additional details or potential leads that could shed light on how the fatal substance might have entered the watermelon, emphasizing the complexity of tracing the source of such a tragedy.
Clarifying Misinformation
Amidst the investigation, a video circulating on social media platforms depicted a fruit vendor applying rat poison near a food stall. Law enforcement officials have clarified that this incident is unrelated to the current case. Senior police inspector Dushyant Chavan of Malad station confirmed that the video pertains to an event that took place in February and involved a food stall in Malad. In that instance, the vendor had reportedly used rat poison around the stall to deter rodents when closing for the night, but no poison was introduced into the fruit itself. An FIR was registered at the Malad police station regarding that separate incident, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between unrelated events and the ongoing Pydhonie investigation.
