Dual Vessel Expedition
Prepare for an unparalleled Antarctic adventure with Terra Nova Expeditions' innovative hybrid itinerary. This 20-day journey, launching for the December
2026 and January 2027 seasons, begins in Ushuaia, Argentina. Travelers will initially cross the formidable Drake Passage aboard a converted cargo liner, designed for robust expeditionary exploration. During this phase, guests will engage in a variety of activities across the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. Expert naturalists will guide discussions on the fragile Antarctic environment, while opportunities for kayaking among majestic icebergs and exhilarating Zodiac excursions ashore will be plentiful. The expedition team ensures a high level of personal attention, with an expedition guide accompanying every eight passengers.
Intimate Yacht Experience
The highlight of the voyage arrives on day eight, when a select group of up to six passengers will transfer from the main expedition ship, the _St. Helena_, to the custom-built polar sailing yacht, _Icebird_. This much smaller vessel offers a distinct advantage: unparalleled maneuverability. Its design allows it to navigate narrow channels and access secluded anchorages that are inaccessible to larger ships. This proximity provides an experience akin to being in a Zodiac, offering guests incredibly close encounters with the rich marine life. The _Icebird_ promises a more personal and serene exploration, allowing for flexibility to chase wildlife and optimal conditions, as noted by CEO Greg Carter. Activities on the yacht can include polar plunges (weather permitting) and observing glaciers and icebergs from its comfortable, climate-controlled decks or heated pilothouse.
Comfort and Logistics
The _Icebird_ yacht is meticulously designed for comfort in the extreme Antarctic environment. Its interiors are fully climate-controlled, ensuring a pleasant onboard atmosphere regardless of external conditions. Thoughtful amenities, such as heated towel rails in guest bathrooms, add to the luxurious feel. Passengers transferring to the yacht will pack a smaller bag for their week-long sojourn, with their main luggage stored securely aboard the _St. Helena_ until their return. This logistical arrangement ensures a seamless transition between the two vessels. The yacht's sailing schedule is entirely dictated by prevailing weather, ice, and wildlife sightings, emphasizing real-time responsiveness and creating truly unique, personalized experiences for each guest.
Operator and Excursion Options
Terra Nova Expeditions, a new entrant to the Antarctic tourism scene, is in the process of obtaining Provisional Operator Membership with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), the leading regulatory body for Antarctic tours. This membership, which will encompass both the _St. Helena_ and _Icebird_, is expected to be finalized before the inaugural voyages commence. The _Icebird_ itself operates under a charter agreement. For those who prefer not to commit to several days on the yacht, Terra Nova Expeditions also offers the _Icebird_ as a day excursion on other itineraries. This shorter adventure accommodates eight guests, attended by three crew members, providing a taste of the yacht's intimate exploration capabilities.
