Dominating the list as India's largest airport by land area is the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, sprawling across an impressive 5,500
acres. This pioneering greenfield airport, established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, was the first in India to offer both domestic and international e-boarding services. Located in Shamshabad, it features advanced amenities including 12 passenger boarding aero bridges, 19 self-check-in kiosks, and 46 immigration counters. The airport is equipped with a VIP lounge, 83 parking bays, and world-class facilities, handling over 21 million passengers and 140,000 tonnes of cargo between April 2022 and March 2023, solidifying its position as India's fourth busiest airport by passenger traffic. With two runways measuring 3,800m and 4,260m, and a single terminal, it represents a significant feat of modern aviation infrastructure.
Delhi's Busiest Hub
Following closely as the second largest is the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, covering 5,106 acres. This airport is distinguished by being the only one in the country with four runways and consistently holds the title of the nation's busiest airport. Situated in Palam, it is engineered to manage an annual passenger capacity exceeding 37 million. In 2023, it was recognized by Skytrax as the 'Best Airport in India and South Asia'. A significant development on July 13, 2023, saw the inauguration of the country's first dual elevated eastern cross taxiways, spanning 2.1 km, along with its fourth runway of 4,400m. The airport boasts three terminals and excellent connectivity to the city centre via the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway, featuring runways of varying lengths including 2,816m, 3,813m, 4,430m, and 4,400m.
Bengaluru's Solar Powerhouse
Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru ranks third, encompassing 4,008 acres. This airport is notable as South India's first to operate two parallel runways and is the third busiest in India by passenger volume. Named after Bengaluru's founder, it also holds the distinction of being Karnataka's first fully solar-powered airport. Strategically located approximately 30 km from the city via NH 44, it facilitates direct and connecting flights to major global destinations. The inauguration of its second terminal in December 2022, alongside an 11-acre fuel farm and three cargo terminals, further enhances its capabilities. Bengaluru Airport is also pioneering CTX machine trials at its T2 terminal, integrated with an Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) and full-body scanners, aiming to be the first Indian airport to implement such technology. Both of its runways measure 4,000m.
Goa's Twin Aviation Points
Goa features two significant airports on the list. The Manohar International Airport in Mopa, North Goa, covers 2,132 acres and commenced operations on January 5, 2023, after its opening on December 11, 2022. Named in honour of Manohar Parrikar, it's Goa's second international airport. It boasts a 3.5 km runway, an ATC tower, a cargo terminal, and a food court. The older Goa International Airport (Dabolim) spans 1,700 acres and has been operational since 1955 within a naval air base. Its integrated terminal building, operational since December 2013, features a modern design and can handle over five million passengers annually, with 75 check-in counters and 30 immigration counters. Manohar Airport has a runway length of 3,750m, while Dabolim's runway is 3,430m.
Eastern India's Aerial Hub
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, the largest in Eastern India, ranks sixth with an area of 1,640 acres. It is also the country's sixth busiest airport. This facility is equipped with two parallel runways and three terminal buildings, designed to accommodate over 18 million passengers annually. The airport features advanced systems like CAT-II ILS for night landings, 78 immigration counters, 128 check-in counters, and 18 aerobridges. Its two runways measure 3,300m and 3,860m, making it a vital aviation node for the region. Further south, Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi, spanning 1,560 acres, is named after the tribal freedom fighter. Operated by AAI, it handles over 2.4 million passengers annually and features a modern integrated terminal, new aerobridges, and an advanced cargo facility inaugurated in February 2017. Its single runway measures 2,748m.
Mumbai's Capacity and Nagpur's Gateway
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai occupies 1,500 acres and is renowned as India's second busiest airport, capable of handling over 60 million passengers annually. It features the country's second tallest ATC tower at 87.5 metres and offers extensive amenities including multi-level car parking, the luxury GVK Lounge, 48 escalators, 75 elevators, 192 check-in counters, and 60 immigration counters. Its strategic location offers excellent connectivity via the Eastern and Western Express Highways. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, covering 1,460 acres, is conveniently located 8 km from the city centre. Its new terminal building, operational since April 14, 2008, spans 17,500 square metres and is designed to manage 550 passengers per hour. The airport includes a baggage conveyor system, 600 car parking spaces, 18 parking bays, and 20 check-in and 20 immigration counters. Nagpur's runway measures 3,200m.
Kochi's Green Initiative
Cochin International Airport in Kochi, the tenth largest at 1,300 acres, is also Kerala's largest airport. It is distinguished as the world's first fully solar-powered airport and the first to be built using a public-private partnership (PPP) approach. It hosts India's first charter gateway, the 'Business Jet Terminal', and features three passenger terminals and a cargo terminal. Strategically situated between NH 544 and MC Road, it offers convenient access from across the city and is recognized as the fourth biggest airport in South India. Its runway extends to 3,445m, underscoring its significant capacity and modern infrastructure. This airport exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to aviation, integrating sustainable energy solutions with operational efficiency.
Future Aviation Megaprojects
India is poised for a massive expansion in its aviation infrastructure with several mega airports under development. The Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is set to be India's largest, covering an extraordinary 7,200 acres and designed with six runways, aiming to handle 12 million passengers annually. Navi Mumbai International Airport (D.B. Patil Airport) is another significant project, spanning 2,866 acres and expected to commence full operations by June 2025, designed to host 25 lakh passengers. In Andhra Pradesh, the Bhogapuram Airport, with an area of 2,200 acres, is nearing completion at 97%, designed to withstand cyclone winds up to 275 kmph, with a planned opening on June 26, 2026. Dholera International Airport in Gujarat, a cargo-focused initiative on 3,500 acres, is rapidly progressing with initial operations anticipated by late 2026. These projects signify India's ambition to lead in global aviation capacity and connectivity.
