Understanding the Annual Pass
Introduced on Independence Day in 2025, the NHAI FASTag Annual Pass aims to simplify travel for regular national highway users. This initiative has quickly
become popular, with over 5 million motorists now holding a pass, accounting for nearly 28% of all car toll transactions on national highways. The pass is exclusively for use on National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE), and does not cover toll plazas on state highways or privately managed roads. Importantly, opting for this pass is entirely voluntary; you can continue using your standard FASTag for per-trip toll payments if you prefer not to purchase the annual option. The pass is designed for private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans, offering a set number of toll crossings or a one-year period, whichever limit is met first, thereby providing a cost-effective solution for those frequently on the road.
Digital Payments on Highways
The landscape of toll collection on national highways is rapidly evolving towards a fully digital system. Drivers now have the flexibility to settle toll fees using either their FASTag or via UPI. For those without a FASTag, there are financial implications: a potential 25% surcharge when paying through UPI, or double the standard toll amount if opting for cash payment. This shift underscores the government's push for cashless transactions and enhanced efficiency at toll plazas across the country. The widespread adoption of FASTag since its 2016 launch, with approximately 11.86 crore tags issued and nearly 5.9 crore active users, demonstrates its success as India's primary electronic toll payment method and paves the way for further digital integration.
Cost and Validity Explained
While the NHAI FASTag Annual Pass offers significant benefits, its price will see a modest increase of Rs 75 per year starting from April 1, 2026. Despite this small revision, the pass remains a financially attractive option for frequent highway travelers, as the cost per trip continues to be considerably lower than paying individual toll charges for each journey. The validity of the FASTag Annual Pass is dual-ended: it remains active for one full year from the date of activation or until the user completes 200 toll crossings, whichever occurs first. Upon reaching either of these limits, the pass automatically expires, requiring users to either renew it for continued benefits or revert to paying tolls on a per-trip basis for future travel.
Application and Activation Process
Securing or renewing your NHAI FASTag Annual Pass is a straightforward process. Motorists can initiate their application or renewal through the dedicated Rajmarg Yatra App or by visiting the official websites of the National Highways Authority of India and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Once your application is submitted and payment is processed, the pass is linked to your existing FASTag and typically becomes active within a 24-hour period. To activate, you'll need to log into your FASTag-linked account, provide your vehicle registration details, and enter your registered mobile number. Payment can be conveniently made using UPI, debit or credit cards, or net banking. Following successful payment, the pass is automatically associated with your FASTag, granting you access to its benefits for the specified duration or trip count.
