Asha Bhosle's deep connection with food wasn't merely a casual interest; it was woven into the fabric of her upbringing. Her formative years, spent traversing
the country with her father's travelling theatre company, exposed her to a rich tapestry of culinary influences. This early immersion in diverse food cultures, coupled with the comforting aromas from her mother's kitchen, laid the foundation for a lifelong appreciation for gastronomy. In fact, she famously once remarked that had she not pursued a career in singing, her alternate path would have undoubtedly been that of a chef. This passion later manifested in the creation of 'Asha's,' a restaurant chain that sought to share her personal culinary journey with the world, opening its doors first in Dubai in 2002 and subsequently expanding across continents.
Muscat Gosht's Origin
Among the many culinary gems on Asha's restaurant menu, 'Muscat Gosht' stands out as a dish imbued with personal significance. Its genesis traces back to a memorable childhood trip to Muscat with her family. During this visit, a chance encounter with a restaurant serving a delightful 'karai gosht' sparked her culinary curiosity. The dish was so impressive that Asha took the initiative to compliment the chef and inquire about its preparation. This experience sowed the seeds for her own rendition, which she later lovingly prepared for her family. To honor the city that inspired it and the chef who created it, she christened this unique creation 'Muscat Gosht,' a tribute that continues to delight diners at her establishments, as revealed by her global brand manager, Sudheer Bastian.
A Vegetarian Delight
The celebrated Hare Baingan Ka Bharta holds a special place in Asha Bhosle's heart, transcending its status as a mere restaurant offering. This vegetarian delicacy was not only a personal favorite but also a cherished recipe passed down from her mother, Mai. Asha fondly recalled her mother's culinary prowess, noting that while Mai prepared a variety of non-vegetarian dishes for her father, she herself remained a lifelong vegetarian. The Hare Baingan Ka Bharta, a simple yet flavorful preparation of oven-roasted and mashed green eggplants, tempered with mustard seeds, onions, garlic, green chilies, and fresh coriander, cooked in ghee, was a dish both mother and daughter adored. This humble dish, born from familial love and culinary tradition, finds its rightful place on the Asha's menu, offering a taste of nostalgic comfort.
Mother's Culinary Legacy
Asha Bhosle often spoke with deep affection about her mother, Mai, and her exceptional cooking skills. Despite being a devout Gujarati vegetarian, Mai possessed an extraordinary talent for preparing a wide array of dishes, catering to the diverse palates of her family, including her non-vegetarian husband. Asha particularly cherished her mother's inventive creations, such as chicken pulao and chicken curry, which were a particular favorite of her father. While Asha herself learned to cook these dishes and even replicated them, she admitted that her mother's preparations held an unparalleled taste and authenticity. This profound admiration for her mother's culinary legacy underscores the emotional depth and familial connection embedded within Asha Bhosle's appreciation for food.
