Major Funding Boost
The Maharashtra government has given the green light to a substantial financial allocation of ₹993 crore, earmarked for the extensive development of six
significant pilgrimage and heritage destinations within the state. This strategic decision was formalized during a recent cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The overarching objective of this considerable investment is to significantly enhance the infrastructure, aesthetic appeal, and historical preservation of these culturally important sites. By undertaking these comprehensive development projects, the state aims to foster a notable increase in tourism, while simultaneously ensuring superior facilities and amenities for both devoted pilgrims and curious tourists visiting these locations.
Bhimashankar Temple Development
A significant portion of the approved funds, totaling ₹172.22 crore, has been designated for the all-encompassing and sustainable development of the Bhimashankar Temple. This revered site, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, will undergo numerous transformations. Key improvements include the establishment of a contemporary bus terminal and a dedicated parking area, crucial land acquisition processes, and the widening of access roads from 2.7 meters to 7 meters. Additionally, the project encompasses the creation of diversion roads, enhanced pedestrian pathways, covered walkways, new flooring, and an amphitheatre. Environmental considerations are addressed through a 257 KLD sewage treatment plant. To bolster safety and visitor services, a new police station and a rest house are also planned. Future proposals, currently under consideration, include the construction of a substation near Dimbhe Dam, a ropeway for easier access, and the development of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) resorts and other tourism-related facilities at Rajapur. Officials have been directed to ensure the completion of these works by May 2027, highlighting a commitment to timely execution.
Sant Tukaram & Ajinkyatara Fort
The initiative also includes a sanction of ₹41.71 crore for the meticulous conservation and development of the birthplace of Sant Tukaram Maharaj in Dehu. This involves enhancing the Vaikunthgaman temple and Bhandara Hill. The development plan here prioritizes road beautification, improved sanitation, provision of drinking water, dedicated parking facilities, and accommodation for pilgrims. An information center will be established, alongside extensive tree plantation and environmental conservation efforts. In Satara district, ₹134.80 crore has been approved for the preservation, conservation, and beautification of the historic Ajinkyatara Fort. This ambitious project will see infrastructure upgrades, the installation of viewing galleries, improved pedestrian pathways, extensive landscaping, restoration of the Raj Sadar, and conservation of existing bastions. New tourist attractions are planned, including a suspension bridge, alongside essential sanitation and rest facilities to enhance the visitor experience.
Sangam Mahuli & Grishneshwar Temple
Further enhancing heritage preservation, the state government has allocated ₹133 crore for the conservation of the memorial complex at Sangam Mahuli. This project focuses on the restoration and landscape development of the samadhis of Maharani Tarabai, Maharani Yesubai, and Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. It also includes the conservation of the historic Sangameshwar temple and its ghats, along with the construction of a hanging bridge, a viewing gallery, and improved pathways. For the development of the Grishneshwar Temple Jyotirlinga shrine in Verul, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, a revised plan amounting to ₹210.45 crore has been approved, necessitating an additional ₹53.82 crore in funding. This development includes a pilgrim accommodation facility, a queue hall, a shopping complex, a function hall, enhanced ghats, and a crucial 1.6-km bypass road to manage traffic flow.
Parli Vaijnath Temple Expansion
A significant additional development plan, valued at ₹301.54 crore, has been sanctioned for the Parli Vaijnath Temple in Beed district. This extensive project will be executed in three distinct phases to ensure thorough implementation. Key features include the construction of grand entrance gates, the deployment of a digital queue management system for crowd control, comfortable waiting halls, and an annachhatra (community kitchen). Wellness facilities such as yoga and meditation centers are planned, alongside the scientific restoration of the Harihar and Markandeya tirths. The project also incorporates cycling tracks, facilities specifically designed for persons with disabilities, food courts, and comprehensive CCTV surveillance for enhanced security. The third phase of this ambitious plan envisions the installation of a large statue of Lord Shiva on Meru Parvat, accompanied by a Shiv Puran and Vedic museum, an amphitheatre for cultural events, and dedicated meditation areas, promising a holistic spiritual and recreational experience.
