Airport Culinary Debut
Passengers at Kannur International Airport can now savor the acclaimed culinary creations from Kannur Central Jail, thanks to a new mobile counter established
by prison authorities. This expansion brings the jail kitchen's reputation for quality and affordability directly to travelers. The initiative has already seen immense success across Kerala, with demand for these wholesome meals steadily growing. The airport counter operates daily between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM, offering a tempting array of dishes. Following airport operations, the mobile unit relocates to the Mattannur bus stand, continuing to serve customers until 6:00 PM. This strategic placement ensures wider accessibility for both departing passengers and the local community, further solidifying the jail's food products as a public favorite.
Diverse Menu Options
The offerings at the Kannur Central Jail's airport counter are diverse, catering to various tastes. Travelers can indulge in favorites like chapati, chicken biryani, chilli chicken, chicken kebab, chicken curry, egg curry, and vegetable curry. For those with a sweet tooth or looking for a light snack, the menu also includes delicious laddus and crispy banana chips. This comprehensive selection ensures that there's something for everyone, from a hearty meal to a quick bite. The availability of these items at such accessible price points makes them a popular choice for both local residents and international visitors.
Unbeatable Pricing Strategy
A significant draw for Kannur Central Jail's food products is their remarkably low pricing, a key factor contributing to their widespread popularity. For instance, a packet of ten chapatis is available for just Rs 30. Chicken biryani, a substantial meal, is priced at an attractive Rs 70, while the vegetable biryani option is even more affordable at Rs 45. Main course items like chicken curry are set at Rs 30, and egg curry at Rs 20. Even snacks and sweets are incredibly budget-friendly. Laddu is sold at Rs 200 per kilogram, banana chips at Rs 165 for a 500-gram pack, and chocolates at Rs 60 for 100 grams. Chicken kebab and chilli chicken are both priced at Rs 80. This pricing structure makes nutritious and tasty food accessible to a broad segment of the population.
Beyond State Borders
The appeal of Kannur Central Jail's food extends beyond the borders of Kerala, with international travelers increasingly purchasing these items before their flights. Particularly, the jail-made laddus and banana chips have garnered attention from overseas passengers. This international exposure not only boosts the products' popularity but also serves as a testament to their quality and unique appeal. Prison officials are optimistic that this expanded sales network will enhance the visibility of jail-manufactured goods on a global scale. The positive reception from diverse clientele underscores the success of the jail's culinary initiatives.
Rehabilitation Through Work
The initiative to sell food prepared by inmates at Kannur Central Jail also plays a crucial role in the prison's rehabilitation efforts. By creating additional work opportunities and skill-based activities within the jail system, the prison department aims to empower inmates and equip them with valuable vocational skills. Superintendent K. Venu highlighted the strong public acceptance these food items have received over the years, indicating the quality of work produced. The expanded sales network is expected to further strengthen these rehabilitation programs by providing a sustainable source of engagement and income for the inmates, fostering a sense of purpose and contributing to their eventual reintegration into society.
