One of the key dietary components highlighted by the dermatologist is the consumption of reheated refined oils. Refined oils, frequently utilized in Indian
cooking due to their availability and neutral flavor, undergo structural changes when heated repeatedly. This process leads to the formation of harmful free radicals, unstable molecules that accelerate aging by damaging skin cells. These free radicals not only diminish collagen, but also interfere with the skin's capacity to repair itself. Common fried snacks and foods cooked in these oils, often staples in Indian cuisine, thus, inadvertently contribute to the acceleration of skin aging. The frequent use of these oils in various culinary preparations across India makes this a significant factor in skincare discussions within the region.
Crispy Fried Foods
Building on the previous point, the dermatologist also cautions against the regular intake of crispy fried foods. The primary issue with these foods stems from the process of deep-frying, which often involves the use of the previously mentioned reheated refined oils. The high temperatures involved in frying induce oxidation of the oils, as well as the foods themselves, leading to the creation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are known to attach to collagen and elastin fibers, making them rigid and less elastic, which results in wrinkles and sagging skin. Moreover, the high fat content, frequently found in fried foods, can trigger inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is another catalyst for aging and can worsen skin conditions like acne and eczema, therefore, increasing the rate of visible aging signs.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
The third food item to watch out for, as advised by the Hyderabad-based dermatologist, is high fructose corn syrup. Widely used as a sweetener in packaged foods and beverages, high fructose corn syrup can have significant consequences for skin health. When the body processes excessive amounts of fructose, it contributes to the formation of AGEs, similar to the effects of fried foods. These AGEs speed up the breakdown of collagen, resulting in loss of skin firmness and the emergence of wrinkles. Additionally, high fructose corn syrup consumption can lead to insulin resistance, which has been linked to increased inflammation and skin issues. Reducing the intake of sugary drinks and processed foods containing this ingredient can be an impactful step towards preserving skin health and slowing the aging process.
