Erratic Supply Woes
The restaurant industry is currently in a challenging phase, struggling to maintain consistent operations due to a severe shortage of Liquefied Petroleum
Gas (LPG) cylinders. While the government has made a move to increase the allocation for commercial use up to 70%, industry executives indicate that it will take a considerable amount of time before this translates into a stable and sustained supply on the ground. Anurag Katriar, a prominent figure in the hospitality sector, has expressed that the supply remains highly restricted and unpredictable, fostering a prevailing sense of apprehension. The crucial point of concern, as highlighted by Pradeep Shetty, Vice-President of the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), is the speed at which this revised allocation will actually materialize into readily available cylinders for businesses. This ongoing supply constraint is significantly hampering the sector's ability to function at full capacity.
On-the-Ground Impact
A survey of popular dining districts, such as the cluster of independent restaurants on 12th Main in Indiranagar, vividly illustrates the immense pressure the sector is under. Nikhil Gupta, who manages several well-known eateries including The Pizza Bakery and Paris Panini, described the current scenario as being entirely 'hand-to-mouth.' This means businesses are operating with just enough supplies for immediate needs, leaving no buffer for unforeseen circumstances or increased demand. Sagar Daryani, co-founder and CEO of Wow! Momo Foods and president of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), further elaborated that the recent government announcement doesn't directly alleviate the immediate plight of the restaurant sector, as they are still receiving only about 20% to 30% of their required LPG supplies. The situation is also characterized by regional disparities, with states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Rajasthan imposing restrictions on restaurant allocations, which further exacerbates the difficulties faced by businesses in these areas.
