Missy's Routine Disrupted
Missy, a lively Siberian husky mix, thrives on her established routines, particularly her cherished Monday visits to daycare. However, her owner, Heath
Hrappstead, had planned a vet appointment, an unwelcome deviation from her usual schedule. Upon realizing she was being left behind, Missy, clearly displeased, decided to take matters into her own paws. She subtly orchestrated her departure by digging beneath the backyard gate at her home in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. This wasn't just a random act; Missy strategically chose to follow the familiar route she usually traveled with her owner on a bicycle, demonstrating a remarkable level of planning and determination.
The Unexpected Arrival
Arriving at the daycare just before 11 am, a muddy but resolute Missy presented herself to the astonished staff. The daycare, Spot's Place, is only a few blocks from her home, making her solo journey feasible. The staff, initially taken aback to see her loose in the car park, promptly welcomed her inside. They expressed immense surprise, exclaiming their disbelief that she had managed to arrive on her own. What struck them most was Missy's nonchalant demeanor; she acted as if it were a completely normal occurrence, greeting them with an attitude of 'Hey guys, I'm here! Sorry, I'm late!' This behavior underscored her strong desire to be at the daycare, emphasizing her energetic nature and fondness for playing with her canine companions.
A History of Escapes
Heath Hrappstead, Missy's owner, revealed that this impressive feat of escape was not an isolated incident. This marked the second time Missy had successfully made her way to the daycare without assistance. The previous escape involved a less elaborate method, where she managed to squeeze through the gate rather than digging her way out. Hrappstead acknowledged the need to reinforce the gate's security to prevent future unauthorized excursions. He explained that Missy typically accompanies him on his bicycle commute to work, but on the day of her escape, she remained at home and was visibly upset about being left behind. Her partner had left her in the yard, providing the opportune moment for Missy's well-planned jailbreak, retracing the familiar morning route.
Friendship Fuels the Journey
Missy's extraordinary adventure was primarily motivated by her deep affection for her best friend, Shaggy, a fellow dog at the daycare. Mackenzie Hoffman, a staff member at Spot's Place, noted that Missy was covered in mud, a testament to her determined journey. The staff recognized the significance of her arrival, stating, 'So we're like, ‘Perfect, she gets to see Shaggy.’ We're like, ‘They probably want to see each other. She came all the way to see Shaggy.’’ Hoffman further elaborated on their strong bond, mentioning that while Missy has other friends, she and Shaggy are particularly drawn to each other. Missy has been attending the daycare for four years; she initially came twice a week with her canine brother. After his passing, her visits were increased to daily to aid in her grieving process, highlighting the crucial role the daycare and its social environment play in her well-being.
