A Call for Holistic Well-being
Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan recently highlighted the growing significance of naturopathy and yoga as vital tools for addressing the prevalent lifestyle
diseases plaguing modern society. Speaking at the 81st Foundation Day of the Nisargopachar Ashram in Pune, he drew a parallel between the ashram's ethos and Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of life—one characterized by simplicity, discipline, and a deep connection with the natural world. Radhakrishnan articulated that true health transcends mere absence of illness; it encompasses a comprehensive state of physical, mental, and spiritual equilibrium. He underscored the escalating challenge posed by non-communicable diseases and stressed the imperative of prioritizing preventive healthcare strategies. These strategies, he noted, should integrate balanced dietary habits, consistent physical activity, and robust mental well-being practices, aligning with the foundational principles championed by institutions like the ashram.
Ancient Wisdom, Global Reach
Drawing from his experiences as a former Governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra, the Vice-President observed the profound and enduring value of indigenous healing methods, particularly among tribal communities. He recognized these practices not merely as remedies but as integral components of India's rich civilizational knowledge heritage. Radhakrishnan further pointed out that traditional medicinal systems have witnessed a surge in global recognition and adoption in recent years. He attributed part of this resurgence to proactive governmental initiatives, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at promoting the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) sector and fostering wellness tourism across the nation, thereby showcasing India's vast therapeutic landscape on an international stage.
Harmony with Modern Medicine
Vice-President Radhakrishnan clarified that yoga and naturopathy should be viewed as valuable complements to contemporary medical science, rather than as direct substitutes. In an era increasingly defined by rapid advancements and material pursuits, he emphasized that genuine and lasting contentment arises from cultivating inner peace and achieving a state of balance. He articulated a vision for a 'Swasth Bharat'—a healthy India—running parallel to the national aspiration of becoming a developed nation. Institutions like the Nisargopachar Ashram, he posited, are instrumental in shaping a healthier populace and, by extension, a healthier society. His address also served as an occasion to pay homage to the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Manibhai Desai, and to celebrate the release of a book authored by Dr. Narayan Hegde.
