Record Passenger Throughput
During the 2025-26 fiscal period, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) achieved a significant milestone, processing a total of 44.47 million
passengers. This remarkable figure underscores the airport's robust performance and its increasing importance as a major aviation gateway. Alongside passenger numbers, the airport also managed substantial cargo operations, handling 5.32 lakh metric tonnes. This dual success in both passenger and cargo movements highlights the comprehensive growth trajectory of KIA and its contribution to the region's economic activity. Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) attributed this expansion to a combination of factors, including a strong rebound in travel demand and efficient operational management, solidifying its position in the aviation landscape.
International Travel Surge
A pivotal element in Bengaluru Airport's impressive growth for the 2025-26 fiscal year was the outstanding performance of its international traffic. International passenger numbers experienced a substantial increase of 23.9%, reaching a total of 7.23 million travelers. This dynamic growth significantly outpaced domestic travel expansion. In contrast, domestic passenger traffic saw a more moderate but still positive growth of 3.3%, bringing the total number of domestic travelers to 37.24 million. The combined effect of these two segments resulted in an overall passenger traffic increase of 6.2% year-on-year. This pronounced surge in international travel is a clear indicator of Bengaluru's escalating global connectivity and its growing appeal as a destination for both business and leisure.
Global Hub Relevance
The sustained passenger growth at Kempegowda International Airport, even amidst global economic uncertainties, is a testament to Bengaluru's evolving status as a vital hub for business and innovation. The airport's increasing international connectivity, evidenced by the 23.9% surge in international passenger traffic, directly reflects the city's burgeoning role on the global stage. This heightened relevance attracts more international visitors, bolstering both tourism and commercial opportunities. The airport's ability to cater to this expanding international demand with efficiency and capacity further solidifies Bengaluru's reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking city, capable of hosting and facilitating significant global engagement.
Transfer Traffic Momentum
Beyond direct arrivals and departures, Bengaluru Airport also observed a significant uplift in transfer traffic during the 2025-26 period, with an approximate year-on-year increase of 22%. This segment now accounts for roughly 15.7% of the airport's total passenger volume, showcasing its growing importance as a transit point. While domestic transfers represent the most established component of this traffic, growing at a steady rate of about 3.2%, the international transfer segment demonstrated extraordinary expansion, soaring by over 50%. This rapid growth in international transfers points to a substantial long-term potential, suggesting the airport is becoming an increasingly attractive and efficient connection point for global journeys.
