Crafting this potent, natural Khas mist at home is incredibly economical, costing a mere fraction of high-end toners, requiring only dried organic roots and a bit of patience.
Quick Infusion Method
For those seeking swift results without a complex setup, the simple infusion technique is ideal. This method produces a gentle, water-soluble extract perfect for daily use as a refreshing facial spritz. Begin by meticulously washing a handful of dried vetiver roots under running water to eliminate any lingering dirt or soil particles. Subsequently, bring two cups of distilled water to a vigorous boil. Carefully place the cleaned roots into a clean glass jar, then pour the boiling water directly over them. Seal the jar's lid tightly. Allow the mixture to steep undisturbed on your countertop for a span of 12 to 24 hours. During this time, the water will gradually transform, acquiring a lovely golden-brown hue and releasing the characteristic woody, grounding aroma of vetiver. Once steeped, strain the liquid thoroughly using a fine muslin cloth, transferring it directly into a clean spray bottle. For optimal freshness and efficacy, store your newly prepared mist in the refrigerator.
True Hydrosol Distillation
To truly harness the botanical power, embark on the journey of stovetop distillation to create a genuine hydrosol. This meticulous process captures the pure, concentrated steam essence of the plant, yielding a highly potent floral water that can last up to six months when properly refrigerated. You will require a large cooking pot fitted with a curved lid, a small heat-resistant bowl, and a trivet. Position the trivet inside the cooking pot, then arrange your washed khas roots around its base. Pour enough distilled water into the pot to cover the roots, ensuring the water level remains just below the top of the trivet. Place your empty glass bowl precisely on top of the trivet. Next, invert the pot's lid and place it onto the pot. Set your stove to a gentle simmer. Crucially, place a generous amount of ice cubes directly onto the inverted lid. This temperature differential is where the magic unfolds: the rising hot, infused steam encounters the frigid lid, causing rapid condensation. The resulting liquid then drips directly into your collection bowl. Allow this setup to simmer gently for approximately 45 minutes.
