A Glimpse Behind Bars
For those with an enduring curiosity about the realities of incarceration, Hyderabad's Chanchalguda Central Jail has introduced a novel opportunity. For a fee
of ₹2,000, individuals can now immerse themselves in a 24-hour prison experience, simulating the daily life of an inmate. This program aims to shed light on the strict routines and controlled environment that characterize life within correctional facilities. Those seeking a shorter duration can opt for a 12-hour stay at a cost of ₹1,000. The initiative, launched by the Telangana prisons department on May 12, 2026, is designed to provide a tangible understanding of confinement, moving beyond societal perceptions and into a more grounded reality. This allows citizens to directly engage with an environment often shrouded in mystery and speculation, offering a controlled yet impactful encounter with the justice system's less visible aspects.
Inside the Cell
Upon entering the 'feel the jail' experience at Chanchalguda, visitors are guided through a narrow passage leading to the prison barracks. The accommodations are designed to replicate inmate living spaces. A typical room features a single bed outfitted with navy-blue sheets, set against a plain white wall, accompanied by an earthen pot for drinking water and a compact, attached washroom. Other rooms are configured with multiple beds, such as one arranged with four beds positioned opposite each other. There are also sections enclosed by dual layers of grills, intentionally restricting movement and visibility to enhance the authentic prison feel. This meticulous arrangement of the living quarters, including the confined spaces and basic amenities, aims to convey the stark simplicity and limited personal freedom experienced by those serving time, offering a direct, albeit temporary, exposure to the physical environment of a jail.
Museum and Welfare
Beyond the immersive jail stay, the Chanchalguda prison complex also houses a museum, providing a deeper historical perspective on incarceration. Entry to this museum is priced at ₹10 for students and ₹20 for general visitors, with children under 10 admitted free. Inside, the museum showcases artifacts and exhibits that serve as poignant reminders of the colonial era's penal practices, detailing the severe physical and psychological hardships endured by inmates. The Telangana prisons department revived and expanded this concept, building upon a previous initiative at the Heritage Jail Museum in Sangareddy, which had to be closed due to structural issues. The revenue generated from both the museum entry fees and the 'feel the jail' experience is earmarked for the prisoners' welfare and development fund. This ensures that the initiative not only educates the public but also directly contributes to the betterment and rehabilitation of the inmate population.
